Our liquid biofuels have been extensively certified under both the international ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS sustainability certification schemes as well as various national verifications, such as the Finnish national sustainability system. All our products satisfy the sustainability and traceability criteria of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). In addition, the ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS voluntary schemes have included social responsibility criteria as a part of their standards. UPM participates actively in the stakeholder meetings, working groups and standard development of both ISCC and RSB.
All UPM BioVerno products are certified
ISCC certification
International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) enables the use of renewable fuels in transport in accordance with the European Union Directive on renewable energy. It certifies the sustainability of our operations across the entire production chain.
In addition, UPM Biofuels has been granted an extensive ISCC PLUS sustainability certification covering all products from our biorefinery. ISCC PLUS is a sustainability certification system for bio-based materials, such as chemicals, food ingredients and animal feed. Our ISCC PLUS certification also includes full lifecycle greenhouse gas emission calculations for all refinery streams in line with the ISCC EU certification.
"UPM is committed to the continuous development of standards and active dialogue both within ISCC and RSB, as well as with their stakeholders"

ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification
We are committed to protecting the environment by constantly developing our environmental performance throughout the lifecycle of our products. Our Lappeenranta Biorefinery operations have been certified according to ISO 14001 – the international standard specifying requirements for an effective environmental management system.
All our products are registered under REACH
The EU's chemicals legislation is based on a regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH). It aims to promote sustainable development by improving the protection of health and the environment.
UPM has fulfilled all the requirements of the REACH regulation and sees it as a positive measure in harmonising chemical legislation within the EU. As mainly an end user of chemicals, we have ensured that all our chemical suppliers are aware of the REACH requirements. UPM Biofuels has registered all its products and raw materials under the regulation.
